About Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is a non-surgical treatment that is designed to restore hormonal balance within the body. The body naturally produces hormones that act as messengers, carrying signals that initiate important bodily functions. The production of some hormones can be thrown off balance due to the natural processes of aging that lead to menopause or andropause, or these changes can be brought on by other health or medical issues. (1) Men and women can both be affected by a hormone imbalance that can impact the individual’s quality of life.

When crucial hormones fluctuate, patients may experience unpleasant fatigue, weight gain, moodiness, poor sleep, poor temperature regulation, hair loss, and digestive issues. To help patients feel like their best selves again, we can reintroduce the hormones that are lacking by using pellet therapy, creams, oral medications, or injectables.

What is Pellet Therapy?

Pellet therapy is an effective way to carry out BHRT for patients with hormonal imbalances. We insert small pellets beneath the skin, where they can release the appropriate hormones into the bloodstream gradually over time. This method eliminates the need for topical creams or pills, which require more effort from the patient. Pellets work continuously, automatically administering the hormones that the body needs. The insertion site is typically the upper buttocks or the lower abdomen. (2)

You will need to return to the office to replace your pellet if you wish to continue your treatment. A hormone membership makes this aspect more convenient, as each plan includes the appropriate amount of pellets patients will need over the course of a year.

BHRT Procedures

For hormone pellet insertion, your Swan Medical professional will make a tiny, barely noticeable incision in the skin of the upper buttocks, or the lower midsection. Through this small opening, they will place a small pellet beneath the skin. This pellet will contain the hormones you are lacking, based on your lab testing findings. (2)

After inserting the pellet, we will close the incision and the pellet will begin to release the hormones that will benefit your body. This procedure will most likely be about 30 minutes long, and you can go home directly after. The site of the pellet may be somewhat sore initially. You should refrain from putting pressure on the site or touching it while it heals. (2)

As for topical creams, application is typically daily. (3) Our team will let you know where and how to apply these creams; the application site is often the inner thighs. (4)

Oral BHRT medications are also typically meant to be taken once a day. BHRT injection regimens can differ, and we may recommend either weekly or monthly injections depending on your exact situation.

Results

With BHRT, patients can help restore their hormonal balance within the body and feel healthier as a result. Some results of BHRT can include:

  • Boosted energy: Reintroducing hormones can help address fatigue.
  • Improved libido: BHRT can help balance hormones that regulate sexual function, such as estrogen and testosterone.
  • Better sleep: BHRT can help improve sleep quality, allowing for a more well-rested feeling.
  • Improved temperature regulation: BHRT can help relieve symptoms like hot flashes or night sweats.
  • Improved cognition: BHRT can help with hormone-associated brain fog.
